While Oscar Wilde’s delightfully-witty comedies of manners receive the most fanfare from the general public and much of academia, Wilde’s most “serious” play— Salome —rightfully deserves an equal amount of attention. Written by emerging scholars, established scholars, and notable Wilde scholars at the top of the field, the far-ranging essays in this book—the first collection solely on Wilde’s Salome —provide new readings of the play, allowing us to better assess how and why Salome either fits or does not fit into Wilde’s oeuvre. Framed in a new light in this collection, this fuller understanding of Salome should potentially change the way we read both Salome and Wilde’s entire oeuvre.

Nicholas Frankel presents a revisionary account of Oscar Wilde's final years, spent in poverty and exile in Europe following his release from an English prison for the crime of gross indecency between men. Despite repeated setbacks and open hostility, Wilde--unapologetic and even defiant--attempted to rebuild himself as a man, and a man of letters.--

""Oscar Hammerstein I came to New York in the 1860s, a Prussian runaway with $1.50 his pocket, and found work at a cigar factory. A decade later he was publishing the nation's leading tobacco trade journal and held dozens of patents for cigar-rolling machinery. He made a fortune and turned his efforts to theater. He built eight of them, including four around Longacre Square-later Times Square-which became a thriving theater district. A daring impresario, he was involved at all levels, from booking to composition to stagecraft. Throughout the Gay Nineties and early 20th century, he billed the world's top actors, prima donnas and vaudeville acts. Then, as now, show business was speculation and high adventure, with rivalries fought in the headlines. Always a storm center, Hammerstein played a skillful chess game with both partners and performers while staging first-class shows for capacity crowds. This biography-from an unfinished manuscript by the son of one of his stage managers-recounts the heyday of his bold productions, his often turbulent relationships with associates, and the birth of Broadway."-Provided by publisher"--

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) is now widely recognised not only as one of the most representative figures of the British fin de siècle, but as one of the most influential Anglophone authors of the nineteenth century. In Britain Wilde suffered a long period of comparative neglect following the scandal of his conviction for 'gross indecency' in 1895; and it is only recently that his works have been reassessed. But while Wilde was subjected to silence in Britain, he became a European phenomenon. His famous dandyism, his witticisms, paradoxes and provocations became the object of imitation and parody; h

(Süddeutsche Zeitung) The Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) is a twentieth century classic. He became world renowned for planning and buildingBrasilia, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. In 1988 he was awarded the Pritzker Prize. His buildings are deeply respectful of the site and are characterized by an unmistakable, almost Baroque design impulse. This second and revised edition of "Oscar Niemeyer: A Legend of Modernity" has a new preface and an updated biography and list of works. It contains essays that analyze the important and current aspects of Niemeyer's work, as well as texts by Niemeyer himself. Topics include the place of Niemeyer's work in modern Brazilian architecture, his work as urban planner, the aspect of landscape in his practice, and his influence on architecture in Germany. Niemeyer, who was highly prolific up until his death, is one of the most productive architects in history with over 600 buildings to his name. He was considered the "last giant of modern architecture." (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

Why was Paris so popular as a place of both innovation and exile in the late nineteenth century? Using French, English and American sources, this first volume of a trilogy provides a possible answer with a detailed exploration of both the city and its communities, who, forming a varied cast of colourful characters from duchesses to telephonists, artists to beggars, and dancers to diplomats, crowd the stage. Through the throng moves Oscar Wilde as the connecting thread: Wilde exploratory, Wilde triumphant, Wilde ruined. This use of Wilde as a central figure provides both a cultural history of P

One of the most important yet overlooked of Hollywood auteurs, Budd Boetticher was responsible for a number of classic films, including his famous 'Ranown' series of westerns starring Randolph Scott. With influential figures like Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood acknowledging Boetticher's influence, and with growing academic interest in his work, Gary D. Rhodes and Robert Singer present a vital collection of essays on the director's long career, from a range of international scholars. Looking at celebrated films like 'Buchanan Rides Alone' (1958) and 'Comanche Station' (1960), as well as at lesser-known works like 'Escape in the Fog' (1945) and 'Behind Locked Doors' (1948), this book also addresses Boetticher's influential television work on the James Garner series 'Maverick', and Boetticher's continuing aesthetic influence on contemporary TV classics like 'Breaking Bad'.
